Handicapping a product means making a product which can perform at a certain level and then artificially crippling it so that it performs at an inferior level.
Handicapping may be conditional or unconditional. Conditional handicapping is where the handicapping can be removed, generally for payment of a fee. Upon payment of such a fee, the product is not materially changed or enhanced or replaced, but rather some arbitrary switch (real or metaphorical) is flipped enabling the higher performance.
