A manufacturer designs a printer such that the estimated ink level of a cartridge is recorded. Once this estimated level reaches zero, the printer refuses to print even if ink is actually available.
This may be accomplished by chipping ink cartridges or otherwise.
Constitutes a form of OBSCLOCK.
