Copy Protection

"Copy protection" is defined as a class of violative mechanisms which are not complex enough to qualify as DRM.

If a copy protection scheme involves communicating with a central server, it is definitely DRM. If a copy protection scheme involves assigning some sort of identity to a given user, it is probably DRM.

Something should be considered merely a copy protection scheme and not DRM if it is not highly adaptable, and cannot take revised input from its controller. Rather, it is simply an act of obfuscation. For example, Macrovision, or DVD video's CSS copy protection system.
